about the scene

the hop revolution starts here

Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Riwaka are not just hop varieties — they are the fingerprints of a revolution. Grown in the sun-drenched river valleys of Nelson-Tasman at the top of New Zealand's South Island, these three varieties arrived in international craft brewing circles and rewired what the world expected from a hop. Nelson Sauvin's unmistakable white wine and gooseberry character, Motueka's tropical lime zest and Riwaka's grapefruit intensity gave brewers tools unlike anything grown in Europe or the Pacific Northwest. Within a decade, New Zealand hops appeared in the most celebrated beers produced in the United States, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and beyond.

The breweries that planted this flag are concentrated in a country of five million people with well over three hundred independent craft producers. Wellington's Garage Project built a cult following on relentless experimentation. Auckland's Behemoth and Urbanaut proved that accessible, NZ-forward beers could carry the complexity the world was demanding. 8 Wired in Warkworth and McLeod's on the Northland coast showed that small-town New Zealand could produce benchmark releases. The result is a national craft scene punching far above its weight — compact, innovative and unmistakably shaped by the land that changed brewing forever.
